Nothing Phone 2 Refresh Rate might be on 120Hz even on AOD

Having a 120hz refresh rate was once considered a luxury, however, that is something that now many budget phones could brag about. With that said, keeping it enabled all the time has its fair share of perks and issues. If we talk about the former, then it goes without saying that a fluid and smooth screen with an increase in responsiveness is on the cards.

On the flip side though, it would also result in considerable battery drainage. Therefore, it is extremely important to maintain an equilibrium level of both these elements. In this regard, for many, the best bet is to simply opt for the Dynamic Refresh Rate. As is evident from its name, it tends to tweak the rate based on the task that you are currently carrying out.

For instance, if you are getting your hands on a resource-extensive game, then the rate might be pushed all the way up to 120hz whereas if your device is in idle mode or Always on Display, then the rate will dwindle down to 10 or even 1Hz on some devices. However, if we talk about the newest entry to the Norhin family, then things might be a tad different, and not for good.

We have seen numerous reports wherein users have voiced their concern that the refresh rate of Nothing Phone 2 tends to remain at 120Hz even when Always on Display is enabled. And its direct negative consequence has to be faced by its battery which tends to undergo excessive drainage and an alarming rate.

What’s the Reason for this?

So why is this happening? Well, it could be due to a hardware limitation- LTPO Panel to be more precise. Every major OEM that uses an LTPO display [OnePlus, Samsung, Oppo] seems to be unable to provide a dynamic refresh rate from 1z to 12oHz. And same could be the case with Nothing as well. Usually, AOD idles to 60hz after some time but as soon as a motion is detected it will come back to 120hz.

Users have already tried opting for a Dynamic Refresh rate, but that doesn’t seem to be doing much good. It might bring down the refresh rate to 20Hz, but that’s just about it. Some users of other OEMs did manage to achieve success by executing the adb shell command. So you could give it a try and check if it works out in your favor.
