The offering from the Cupertino giant has undergone quite a lot of issues over their due course of time, however, this seems to be out of the blue. A slew of complaints has lined up across numerous forums wherein iPhone users running the latest iOS 16.6 build have reported that their device restarted all of a sudden overnight when left plugged into the charger.

Could it be due to Battery Optimization?
When they woke up in the morning, they had to type in their device PIN as well, apart from the usual Face ID, thereby further cementing the fact that their device did undergo a reboot. Upon having a look at their battery graph, some assumed it to be due to the Battery Optimization functionality.
For the unaware, this feature learns the device’s battery charging behavior over the due course of time and then charges it accordingly [such as slowing it down after 80%] but making sure that your device gets fully charged before the alarm wakes you up in the morning. However, as is evident from the battery graph, the culprit isn’t the battery optimization.
Is the Update to be Blamed?
Many users assumed that an incremental update might have been installed overnight since automatical updates are installed when the “phone is connected to WiFi, is charging, and is locked”. However, that isn’t the case either as both before as well as after the update, the users are still on the same iOS 16.6 build. Moreover, some even had Automatic Updates turned off.
Were the Time Zones Updated?
Around six years back, Apple had rolled out new time zone and daylight savings data settings and you had to restart your device for its settings to be implemented. While we cannot negate this fact for sure, but chances of it happening this time around are quite minimal as we haven’t seen any reports of timezone updates anywhere across the web.

All in all, it’s quite a challenging task to identify what the real culprit is. Moroever, the fact that only a handful of iPhone users running iOS 16.6 have reported about this issue of their device restarting all of a sudden overnight leaves us with less data to diagnose the issue comprehensively.
