Wireless Charging not working for many Pixel 9/Pro/XL users
If we talk about wireless charging, then it supports 23W with a Pixel Stand and 12W with a Qi-compatible charger. However, it seems all this is only the case on paper as it reality, the device is having a tough time with wireless charging. According to the affected users, the device is either not working with wireless chargers or is extremely slow to charge, well below what is advertised. Apart from the Pixel Stand 2, which is reaching the required charge rate, all the other wireless chargers could hardly even reach the 600mAh mark.
Which Chargers Are Working and Which Aren’t
XDA Senior Member did a detailed investigation into this and here’s what he found [he has used the Ampere app to read the charge rates corresponding to each of these chargers]
Pixel Stand 2: 2000mAh
ESR Magsafe: : 520-550mAh
ESR Cryoboost Magsafe: 550-600mAh
Inui Battery pack: 520-550mAh
Generic stand: 500-550mAh
Anker PowerWave Magnetic 2-in-1 Stand Lite : 500mAh
Initially, even the Pixel Stands starts at a lower rate and then ramps up to a higher rate in stages. It starts close to 650mAh then jumps to 1200 then 1500 then 2000. Unfortunately, other Qi-compatible chargers aren’t able to exhibit the same behavior.
Are Back Covers the Culprit?
Another query that might be popping in your mind is whether or not the rear cover could prove to be the culprit. Well, not exactly. This is because we have come across a few reports wherein users having a genuine/original case, the Spigen rugged and tough armor case, or the Spigen Enzo case aren’t facing this issue.
Is Google Aware of this Issue?
According to XDA Senior Member Chris-c, he got in touch with the Google Support Team and they are indeed familiar with this issue. In their own words, they are “working with engineering and they are aware of this bug”. So we might expect a rollout of the fix in the subsequent OTA update, if this is indeed a software/firmware issue [fingers crossed].
Are there any Workarounds?
As of now, there doesn’t seem to be any workaround that might help you rectify this issue. With that said, you should consider using only the Pixel Stand 2 for wirelessly charging your device and if you are planning to use a back cover, then it should be the Spigen rugged and tough armor case or the Spigen Enzo case [no, we aren’t doing any promotions here, it’s just that these ones from Spigen have proven to be non-conflicting with the Pixel Stand, there might be many others out with the same behavior, however, there aren’t any reports for the same till date].
