Wallpaper Dim Issue on Pixel after Installing March Update [Fixed]

In this guide, we will show you a couple of handy methods to fix the wallpaper dim issue on your Pixel device after installing the latest March update. When it comes to releasing monthly. OTA updates, then the devices from the Silicon Valley giant are right there at the front of the priority queue. However, being the fastest doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a bug-free environment.

Well, in some cases, it can simply mean just the reverse, as is visible in the latest update. In a normal working environment, the wallpaper brightens up in light mode and tones down in dark mode, in other words, it follows the system theme. However, that seems to be no longer the case as the wallpaper still remains dim even in the light mode. This issue first came to light right after users installed the latest March update, so it seems to be the most plausible culprit.

So what did this update end up doing? Well, it seems to be conflicting with the Bedtime Mode functionality of the device [for the unaware, this feature tends to dim the screen and silence the notifications at night time]. With that said, there do exist a couple of nifty workarounds that should help you address this issue. So without further ado, let’s check them out.

It is recommended that you try out each of the below-mentioned workarounds and then see which one spells out success. So with that in mind, let’s get started.

FIX 1: Toggle Bedtime Mode

Your first course of action should be to turn off and then turn on the Bedtime Mode on your device from the Digital Wellbeing menu and then see if it works out for you or not.

FIX 2: Use ADB Commands

  1. Download and extract the Android SDK Platform Tools on your PC.
  2. Next up, go to Settings > About Phone > Tap Build Number 7 times.
  3. Then head to System > Developer Options > Enable USB Debugging.
  4. Once that is done, connect your device to your PC using a USB cable.
  5. Then, open Command Prompt inside the platform tools and type in:
    adb shell dumpsys wallpaper
  6. Now note down the UID [UserID] that is leading to this dimming bug.
  7. Then type in the below command, replacing [UID] with the above one:
adb shell cmd wallpaper dim-with-uid [UID] 0.0

FIX 3: Downgrade To February Update

While this sounds like the most obvious fix, however, it is the most complicated one and also comes with a few caveats, the biggest of which is that it requires an unlocked bootloader. If that’s all well and good, then you can refer to our guide on How to Downgrade Pixel Devices via the Android Flash Tool OR How to Downgrade Pixel Devices via Fastboot Commands.

That’s it. These are the three different methods that should help you fix the wallpaper dim issue on your Pixel device after installing the latest March update. As far as the official stance on this matter is concerned, the developers are aware of this issue, but they haven’t given out any ETA for the rollout of a fix. As and when that happens, we will update this guide accordingly. In the meantime, the aforementioned workarounds are your best bet.
