Use AI Features on Unlocked Bootloader/Rooted Pixel 9/Pro/XL

In this guide, we will show you a couple of methods that should help you use various AI features on your unlocked bootloader/rooted Pixel 9/Pro/XL. In the recently concluded event, Google raised the curtains from its latest offerings in the form of four new devices. Being a part of the ninth iteration, these devices had a major hardware redesign.

Along with that, came with a slew of intriguing tweaks, however, none came close to the plethora of AI features that it houses. In this regard, here are some of its noteworthy Artificial Intelligence tweaks that you’ll be greeted with along with the latest Pixel devices:

  • Pixel Call Notes: It will give you a full transcript of your call right after you end the call. There is no need to keep running around the house finding a pen and paper to jot down the important points from your recently concluded call.
  • New Weather App: There’s a new weather app in town with a completely redesigned UI/UX along with a new weather widget as well. Gemini has also been integrated into it, which will give you the weather report for the day.
  • Pixel Studio: This app will allow you to create an image using the text prompt that you provide. The only app that will help you in letting your imagination run wild! At the time of writing, it is only advisable on the latest Pixel 9 series, however, in this guide, we will show you how to make it up and running on older Pixels as well as non-Pixel devices.pixel studio
  • Gemini Live: This feature allows you to have live free-flow conversations with Google’s AI and is only available to Gemini Advanced subscribers, which includes the Pixel 9 series users. It also works in the background and even when the screen is locked [though using a nifty workaround you can try it out on a non-Pixel or older Pixel device as well].
  • Camera Features: The one domain that everyone was eagerly waiting and it didn’t disappoint a tad bit. There have been numerous new AI features added to the camera app, with my personal favorite being Add Me which will, in simpler terms, allow the person taking the photo to be added to that photograph as well! So there’s no need to ask a stranger to take a photo anymore! Apart from that, there are many under-the-hood enhancements to existing camera features [like Magic Eraser] as well.
  • Screenshot: A new app housing all your screenshots, it allows you to search, organize, and save the extracted information from your screenshot [still wondering who will use this feature, when Google Photos is already capable of searching within the images].

However, if you are a tech enthusiast who is planning to step into custom development or has already stepped into that domain, then you are in for some tough times ahead, especially with regard to these AI features. It is no hidden secret that Gooogle is quite a fan of rooted devices, with issues like Play Integrity being a perfect example of the same.

Likewise, its repercussions are now being spread across other domains as well, with AI being the latest affected party. If the bootloader on your Pixel 9/Pro/XL has been unlocked and/or your device is rooted, then you might not be able to use most of the aforementioned AI features. There have been numerous reports that have already justified this statement.

Moreover, as soon as the user went to the stock ecosystem [removed root and then re-locked the bootloader], the impacted features again started working without any issues. So this all but confirms that rooting is indeed the major or rather the sole culprit behind this problem. With that said, we have found a couple of handy workarounds that should help you address this concern. So without any further ado, let’s check them out.

How to Use AI Features on Unlocked Bootloader/Rooted Pixel 9/Pro/XL

We have listed two different methods that will help you get this job done. While they both might look similar initially, however, there is one major difference between the two.  So go through both of them once and then try out the one that is in sync with your requirements.

FIX 1: Pass Basic and Device Integrity

First off, you should try passing the Basic and Device Integrity and then check if the AI features work on your device or not. Passing both these tests are quite easy as a Magisk Module will do most of the work for you. While you would still fail the Strong Integrity, however, in most cases, that isn’t a cause of any major concern. So refer to our guide on How to Pass Device and Basic Integrity via Play Integrity Fix and check out the results.

FIX 2: Pass Basic, Device, and Strong Integrity

If the first method didn’t work out for you, then you have no choice but to additionally pass the Strong Integrity Test as well, apart from Basic and Device. So why didn’t we recommend this fix initially? Well, this is because passing Strong requires an unrevoked keybox.xml file which is extremely difficult to find. But if you have one, then do check out our guide on How to Pass Strong Integrity [the guide also has tips on how you can get an unrevoked keybox].

Once you have passed the test, proceed ahead with the below steps:

  1. Download and install a root-supported file manager app like Solid File Manager.
  2. Now download this target.txt file [Credits: XDA Member diiosvany].
  3. Then launch it and go to the Root directory. You’ll get an SU prompt, tap on Grant.
  4. Now go to the below directory and you’ll find the target.txt file.

  5. Replace the existing target.txt file with the one that you have downloaded above.
  6. You may also open the existing file, paste the below values in it, and then save it.
