How to Copy Microsoft Teams Chat with Time Stamp

In this guide, we will be discussing a few nifty workarounds using which you’ll be able to copy Microsoft Teams chat along with its time stamp. When work from home came into existence, apps like Zoom, Skype, Google Meets, and Microsoft Teams saw a massive rise in their popularity. However, it was the offering from the Redmond giant that managed to outdo all, and even to this date, it is the de-facto app across all professional workspaces.

Microsoft on its end also releases updates at regular intervals to enhance security, improve performance, and bring in a few new features. However, not every update is in sync with the user’s requirements. In this regard, the latest update has made some significant changes to how you copy-paste messages in the app. Earlier when you used to copy a message, it would also copy the date, time, and the sender’s name.

However, with the latest update, that is no longer the case. When you now copy a message in Microsoft Teams, the time stamp no longer gets copied, and neither does the sender’s name. So now you are left with no choice but to manually copy the said data for every message that you are about to send, This calls for unnecessary additional time and effort, all thanks to a change that no one had asked for in the first place.

Making matters worse is the fact that this might actually be an intended change instead of a bug! What was Microsoft thinking [or were they actually thinking anything?] before implementing such a weird feature in an important business-focused app is anyone’s guess. With that said, we did manage to find a couple of handy workarounds that should help you address this “issue”. So without any further ado, let’s check them out.

It is recommended that you try out each of the below-mentioned workarounds and then see which one spells out success. So with that in mind, let’s get started.

FIX 1: Using Web Version

You can use the web version and copy the text from the MS Teams message like normal and it should work.

FIX 2: Using Shortcut Keys

You can also highlight the whole conversation and press Ctrl+C [Windows] or Command+C [Mac] while holding down the mouse button. Then paste the content and you should get the time stamp along with it. In detail, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Highlight the text you want to copy with your mouse and continue to hold down the mouse button— don’t release it.
  2. Then use your shortcut keys to copy the text (Command+C for Mac or Ctrl+C for Windows), and then release the mouse button.
  3. Paste it where you need it, and it should include the timestamp and the sender’s name.

FIX 3: Delete this Folder

Some users found a temporary fix which involves deleting the MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe folder from the below-listed location. However, do note that the app will re-create this folder in a few hours and the issue will be back. So it’s just a temporary escape from the problem.

 %localappdata%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe

That’s it. These were the various methods that should help you copy Microsoft Teams chat along with its time stamp. What do you think about this change implemented by Microsoft?
