Fix Hogwarts Legacy Save Game File issues

Hogwarts Legacy Save Game File

It is recommended that you try out each of the below-mentioned workarounds and then see which one spells out success. So with that in mind, let’s get started.

FIX 1

  1. Open Run via Windows+R, type %AppData%, and hit Enter. Then go to the below location [replace Username accordingly]
    C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Hogwarts Legacy\Saved\SaveGames\
  2. There will be a folder with some numbers in its name, cut it and paste it to your Desktop
  3. Now open this folder and check out the last autosave by looking at the Date Modified column.
  4. the autosave file you need should be of the same time as when the crash happened, it should be named HL-00-XX. Copy this file.
  5. Open Hogwarts Legacy and create a new character with the same name as your previously created character.
  6. When you reach the first cutscene, go back to the SaveGames folder. Now go to the folder that has all the numbers.
  7. There should be a file named HL-00-XX. Note it down somewhere and then delete it.
  8. Now press CTRL + V, this is going to paste into your autosave file from your original game folder.
  9. Then rename this autosave file with the same name as the file you deleted from Step 8.
  10. Now close and restart Hogwarts Legacy. You should see the new character you created at level 1 in the main menu, click it and start the game.
  11. Once you are in the game, you should see that you’re back to where you were before the game crashed.

FIX 2

  1. Make sure your game has no characters in it. If you already have created a new character, then delete it.
  2. Now bring up Run via Windows + R and type in %appdata%
  3. Then go to the Local > Hogwarts Legacy folder.
  4. Now rename the saved folder to anything you want
  5. Run the game and create a new character (this will create a new saved folder).
  6. Then copy and paste your old save file (under the folder that you renamed, in saved games get the file with 14 in its name) into the new “Saved” folder, go under Savegames (be sure to rename the old save file so that it will match the new one.)
  7. Now restart the game and click on your new character, it should load up the old saved file.

FIX 3

This fix is especially for those users who are unable to load their saved game files and are instead greeted with the unable to save error message. In such cases, all that you need to do is verify the integrity of the saved game files via Steam. It will check for corrupt, missing, or outdated files and replaces them with a new working counterpart.

FIX 4

There are some instances and regions in Hogwarts Legacy wherein you wouldn’t be able to save the game, such as outside the Jackdaw’s Tomb and sometimes in the middle of the quest as well.

FIX 5

You could also switch to a different quest and fast traveled to a new location and then try saving the game in Hogwarts Legacy.

FIX 6

Turn off PS5 Cloud Storage Auto Sync for Hogwarts Legacy, back up your save, and then delete your save from the console. No start afresh and check if it spells out success for you or not.

That’s it. These were the various methods to fix all the different types of save game file issues in Hogwarts Legacy. As far as the official stance on this matter is concerned, the developers are yet to acknowledge this issue, let alone give out any ETA for the rollout of a fix. As and when any of these two things happen, we will update this guide accordingly. In the meantime, the aforementioned workarounds are your best bet.
