In this guide, we will show you how to fix the E: Unable to check merge status error when trying to format data via TWRP. Recently, I was trying to delete the locksettings.db file in order to remove the lock screen from my device without performing a data wipe. While I managed to do that successfully on my older device, I hit a roadblock on my OnePlus 11.
Fortunately, I had taken a backup of that file, so I simply placed the file back in its designated location via ADB Push. However, much to my surprise, things didn’t improve even after that, and I was now left with two choices- either to format data via recovery or reflash the stock firmware. While both will result in a data loss, the former method is much easier and shorter to carry out.
Unfortunately, when I tried doing a format data via TWRP, I was instead greeted with the E: Unable to check merge status error. If you are also in the same boat, then this guide will make you aware of a nifty workaround that should help you rectify this issue. So without further ado, let’s check it out.
Fix TWRP Format Data Error: E: Unable to check merge status

If possible by any means [such as Nandroid Backup], please take a complete device backup. Droidwin and its members wouldn’t be held responsible in case of a thermonuclear war, your alarm doesn’t wake you up, or if anything happens to your device, and data by performing the below steps.
- From the TWRP Recovery, go to Wipe > Advanced Wipe > Checkmark Data.
- Now, click on “Repair or Change File System” and click “Change File System.”
- Then click EXT4, then change it back to F2FS. Now go to Reboot > Recovery.
- Now, go to Wipe > Format Data > type Yes > hit the blue checkmark. Success!
That’s it. These were the steps to fix the E: Unable to check merge status error when trying to format data via TWRP. However, if in your case, the error still persists, then you are left with no choice but to reflash the stock firmware [Fastboot ROM]. So, on that note, we round off this guide.
