5G not working after switching OnePlus from ColorOS to OxygenOS [Fix]

In this guide, we will be discussing some plausible methods to fix the 5G not working on OnePlus after switching from ColorOS to OxygenOS. The smartphone domain is no foreigner when it comes to making questionable decisions. However, there aren’t many that could compete with the recent path that the Chinese OEM decided to traverse. OnePlus has its major USP in the underlying OS that it had to offer.

Maintaining an equilibrium between features and stability, there’s no doubt why OxygenOS quickly became the most popular name in the town. However, the company, mainly to minimize the economies of scale, decided to ditch its own skin and adopt the one that its brother company Oppo has to offer. But it’s no hidden secret that this move wasn’t welcomed by a vast majority of the userbase.

Do note that there’s no universal fix as such. You will have to try out each of the below-mentioned workarounds and see which one works best in your favor. So with that in mind, let’s get started.

FIX 1: Choose NR/LTE/TDSCDMA/GSM/WCDMA

  1. Open the Dialer and type in the below code:
    *#*#4636#*#*
  2. Then select Phone Information under the Testing menu.
  3. After that, tap on Set Preferred Network Type.

  4. Select the following option from the drop-down menu:
    NR/LTE/TDSCDMA/GSM/WCDMA
  5. Check if it fixes the OnePlus 5G not working after switching from ColorOS to OxygenOS.

FIX 2: Disable Smart 5G

Based on usage scenarios, the OnePlus Smart 5G feature logically matches 5G networks to improve battery life. And this is where lies its issue. It seems to put a cap on the background processes related to the network that could simultaneously run on your device.

Likewise, it also tends to limit 5G bands so that on paper it would record a weak 5G signal and would hence switch to 4G, thereby ultimately meeting its ultimate objective of preserving the battery. So it’s better to stay out of this fiasco and enable this functionality for good. Here’s how it could be done:

  1. Head over to the Settings menu on your device.
  2. Then go to WiFi & Network and select SIM & Network.
  3. After that, disable the toggle next to Smart 5G.

FIX 3: Switch SIM Slots

A few users were able to rectify this issue just by performing a simple tweak of changing the sim slots. So take out the SIM tray from your device and place the SIM card in the other slot. Verify if it does any good when it comes to rectifying the 5G issue.

FIX 4: Manually Add the APN Settings

It could well be the case of the  Access Point Name configuration data getting corrupted. So you should get in touch with your network carrier and ask them to re-send the APN details corresponding to your 5G network. Once you have got the details, here’s how to input them:

  1. Head over to Settings > WiFi & Network > SIM & Network.
  2. After that, select your SIM and tap on Access Point Names.
  3. Tap on the plus icon situated at the top right to create a New APN.

FIX 5: Flash Global Firmware

If none of the aforementioned methods managed to work out in your favor, then you could take the nuclear route of switching to the Global RAM. This process is a little bit technical as you will have to flash the global firmware via MSM Tool after booting your device to EDL Mode. Moreover, the data on your device will also be wiped.
