FIX 1: Leave Beta Testing
Many users have reported that the culprit was the messenger Beta app. So if you are also currently using its beta version, then get yourself un-enrolled from the testing group and then download the stable version of the app. Here’s how it could be done:
- Uninstall the current version of the Messenger app from your device.
- Then remove yourself from the beta testing group of Messenger.
- Now go to Apple Store and download the stable version of the app.
- Check if Facebook Messenger is now working on iOS 16/iPadOS 16.
FIX 2: Use the Web Version
As of now, Messenger is working well and good in the web version. So launch the Facebook website via browser and sign in to your account. Then tap on the chat icon situated at the top right and you may now start the conversation. While this wouldn’t give you the same experience that the app would have given you, but you would at least be able to chat using this tweak.
FIX 3: Reinstall Facebook and Messenger

I just updated my ipad mini 6 with the iOS 16. My messenger is not working at all, I followed the steps that have been provided, hope they fix this issues.

Same issue. Works on IPhone 13 but stopped working (unable to load) on my Ipad. Nothing works and, like the previous comment, I am not a beta tester. Thanks for mentioning the browser. At least I can access it now.

This is exactly the problem I have. Not a beta tester. I did just replace my iPad 11 with a new iPad 11 4th generation. The problem seems to be associated with this. App still works fine on my iPhone 12 and wife’s iPad 11 3 rd generation.
